Optimization of manufactured products from natural materials
Since the Stone Age, we have been making things from rocks for use in our everyday lives - hand tools from stone for cutting up meat; bricks from stone, sand & clay for shelter; pottery from clay for cooking, water transport & storage. More recently, coal was used to drive the industrial revolution, and continues to be a major source of energy worldwide. Cement remains the main material with which to build large structures. With the environmental impact of coal burning and cement manufacturing becoming critical global issues, it is important that we continue to better understand how best to exploit these valuable natural resources.
